The Game of Champions

Like an adult Willy Wonka, Phillips Brewery has found yet another way to spark joy into the hearts of us beer-loving adults. The “Phillips Backyard Weekender” is held every summer in Phillips’ “backyard” or loading bay/backstreet/entire neighbourhood.

When you look at the brewery from the street it looks tiny, when you go into the shop it feels even smaller, but if you have the chance to attend the Weekender you’ll get to see the full scale of this magnificent operation. If you’re from BC’s south coast or if you live in Victoria you’ll know Phillips has a reputation for being more fun than everyone else. They make giant beer trucks to take to events, host parties and art shows, brew a special beer just for the Rifflandia music festival (Rifflandibrau) and on top of that they have some grade A beers.

But simply being an awesome brewery that hosts annual parties does not raise you to the Willy-Wonka-Joy-Status. However, hiding tickets under the caps of our favourite beers to both the Weekender AND Rifflandia will do the trick. And all you have to do is drink their Blue Buck or Kolsch and check under the caps.

The Weekender is July 24th to 26th and features Talib Kewli, USS, Dan Mangan, BadBad Not Good, Built to Spill and so many more of our local heroes.

So we thought, “Hey, we drink a lot (a lot) of Blue Buck! Maybe we could win!” We bought a sixer and sat down to play the game.

Cap One: "The Beer is a Winner." True. Exciting. Not what we wanted

Cap Two: Thanks Phillips . . . ok.

Cap Three: Come on! We already know that!

Cap Four: Ok, next beer coming up!

Cap Five: But we just want to be winners!

Cap Six: You know when you have that feeling that yes, you are going to win. That piece of intuition that buzzes in your toes to let you know that the yes is coming . . .
