The Review - Weird Party "Mellow Funk VOL 1"

The first time we encountered Weird Party was at Song and Surf 2015, a rainy, windy, muddy, loving, fantastic winter musical festival in Port Renfrew. Weird Party was wearing classic black suits while the rest of the festival was wearing onsies or animal costumes. They looked like a bunch of Dads amongst a variable riot of misfits. So in that sense, they fit in perfectly.

Once Weird Party took the stage there was no question that their smooth psychedelic jazz layered with crisp funk was going to put on a show like no other at this festival.

That’s Weird Party, “Mellow Funk VOL 1” is something you can bring into your home. It has the same psychedelic tone without the loving misfits. This album’s mellow atmosphere is relaxing and engaging. Mostly it is instrumental, with melodies brought out through guitar and sometimes saxophone with an occasional woman’s voice appearing like a ghost coming and going as an apparition.

Based out of Victoria BC, Weird Party is a four part band, two parts guitar, one part base, and one part drums. However they bring in a variety of featured players to layer up their overall groove.

Songs like “Saxamacain” really brings out the psychedelic in this album, robotic sounds mingling with the apparition woman and smooth funk. While “Feel the Sensation” has the same smooth sound but feels much more like a bricklined murder mystery. Like the 1960s dreaming of a clean robotic future, where cigarette smoky rooms never go out of style. Each song has it’s own vibe while maintaining the Weird Party sound that ties them all in to one unique collection.

This is an album you can take anywhere, house/car/office it will bring you right down to yourself without losing any of it’s own unique character. Check them out online at enjoyweirdparty.com
