The Review - Top 10 Records of 2015 - #5 Currents

Number 5

Tame Impala ‘CURRENTS’

Easily one of the most danceable records on this top 10 list and it would be the top dance album if not for the album at #3. The almost 8-minute opener ‘Let It Happen’ sets the tone for this (yet another on the list) inspired by break-up, disco-esq album. This isn’t the psych rock we’ve known from previous Impala records but instead it more so fits on the shelf beside Daft Punk. Pitchfork describes the sounds best “Nearly every proper song on Currents is a revelatory statement of Parker’s range and increasing expertise as a producer, arranger, songwriter, and vocalist while maintaining the essence of Tame Impala: Parker is just as irreverent working in soul and R&B as he is with psych-rock.” Tame Impala is essentially a Kevin Parker project. The way Parker weaves the themes of a break-up through these songs is nothing short of brilliant. It sounds amicable, at times sad but you can’t help but here his hope for the future.
