Tall Tree Preview

The Tall Tree Music Festival is back on Brown’s Mountain, just outside of Port Renfrew. It’s going to be another big year of bands and DJs. But like any great festival lineup there are always acts that you’re more excited for than others.

Here are our Top 5 Tall Tree Picks for 2016.

These west coast rootsy rockers have been a big part of the Vancouver Island scene for the past decade. They’re playing Friday Night on the Tall Tree main stage. Their music is so consistently good, they are one of those bands that you can listen to anywhere any time and just feel real good. One of my fave Current Swell songs is Young and Able.

Hollerado is hilarious. They showed up to Rifflandia last year wearing pajamas onsies because they were tired from travelling all night. Their music video for Desire 126 is an erectile dysfunction commercial with Dave Foley and Annie Murphy (Alexis from Schitts Creek). For realz. It’s one thing to like a band’s music but it’s another to want to crawl inside their brain machine and figure out what is going on in there. Hollerado is just a real cool band with super catchy tunes, and they’re going to make Saturday night really rad.

Kytami is a self described “Violinistextremist” which is basically a perfect definition of what her stage show is. It’s dub step and hip hop meets classical fiddle to form a freaking crazy marriage that shouldn’t work but is does. She blew the roof off of Philips Backyard stage last year at Rifflandia, it’s going to be pretty awesome to see her play on top of a mountain. Just sayin’.

“It’s all about love” is what Kuba Oms says about his music. Velvet is a local electronic jams band that are going bring a dance party for serious.

We first encountered Weird Party a couple years ago at Song and Surf (Tall Tree’s sister festival in the February). At a festival filled with gum boots and wet wool sweaters Weird Party stood out in their crisp black suits, and holy damn did they get those gum boots dancing with their smooth psychedelic jazz.
